Breakfast, Lunch, & Informal Hall
All of these meals are paid for with your Bodcard, which can be topped up on Upay. Weekly menus are put up here.
Breakfast runs on weekdays from 8:15 to 9:00 in Hall. Cooked and continental breakfast is available. Tea and coffee are provided.
Lunch runs on weekdays from 12:30 to 1:15.
Brunch runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 until 12:15, in place of breakfast and lunch.
Informal hall runs every night apart from Sunday. On most evenings it is held from 6:15 until 7:00, although on evenings when Formal Hall also takes place (Tuesday and Friday) it is held from 5:45 until 6:15.
There is less meal provision during the vacations (the Executive Chef normally emails about this). Occasionally informal hall is cancelled owing to a special dinner, which will be advertised by College or the JCR in advance.
Formal Hall is a three-course dinner, with service, that is open to all students. It is held three times a week: Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday and Friday formals begin at 7:15 with a Latin grace. The Hall staff may turn guests away after this time, so it is advisable to arrive at least five minutes earlier. Large groups who want to sit together tend to arrive at 7 to find spaces. Sunday formals begin at 7:30. As of Hilary Term 2018, the first sitting of Sunday formal has been eliminated.
The cost is usually £5 and you can book in advance on Upay, specifying any dietary requirements. On some nights you can book more than one ticket and bring guests. Tickets can be cancelled on Upay up to 24 hours before the event. Tickets can also be resold to other students, and there is a Facebook group.
You are required to wear your gown and may be refused entry without one. Apart from gowns, there is no specified dress code, although smart-casual (loosely defined) is conventional. Guests wearing shorts or sports kit may be refused entry.
Wine is not included in the price. You are free to buy wine from the Bar, which opens fifteen minutes before formal begins and has a good selection of reasonably-priced bottles. Wine bought elsewhere is not permitted in Hall.
Many dinners take place in the Brasenose calendar. Some, such as Ale Verses and Burns Night, are open to everyone and will be advertised in advance. Tickets are sold on Upay and often go quite quickly. Other dinners, such as the Scholars and Exhibitioners’ Dinner, are by invitation only.
The JCR holds a Guest Dinner once every term, which is an excellent opportunity to bring friends and family to dine in Brasenose.
